When it comes to tooth replacement, dental implants are impossible to beat in terms of quality, strength, function, and longevity. Indeed, they are often labeled as “the next best thing to natural teeth!” Yes, these prosthetics have a lot in common with real pearly whites — but can they also get stained like normal teeth? This blog post explains what you should know.
Implant Restorations Resist Stains
The crowns, bridges, and dentures that get attached to dental implants are known as restorations. Usually, they are made of materials like porcelain, ceramic, or zirconia. These materials are much less porous than natural enamel, so they do not absorb pigments as easily from coffee, tea, red wine, or other dark-colored foods and drinks. As a result, implant restorations tend to hold their shade very well and usually resist the kind of deep staining that can affect natural teeth. In fact, with proper care, you can expect your new smile to maintain its original color for many years!
How Implants Might Become Discolored
Despite their natural resistance to stains, dental implants are not completely immune to looking dull or discolored over time. Plaque and tartar can build up around the restoration and along the gumline, creating a yellow or brown appearance. Smoking and frequent exposure to highly pigmented foods and beverages can also leave surface discoloration behind. In some cases, using abrasive toothpaste or a hard-bristled toothbrush can roughen the outer finish of the restoration, making it easier for stains to collect in the tiny micro-scratches that form.
Keeping Your Implant-Supported Smile Bright and Beautiful
The best way to keep your implant-supported teeth looking bright and beautiful is to practice excellent oral hygiene every day. Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush, use a non-abrasive toothpaste, and clean carefully between your teeth and along your gumline. It is also wise to visit your dentist regularly for checkups and professional cleanings so any plaque buildup can be removed before it affects your smile’s appearance.
If you ever do find that your implants have started to discolor, talk to your dentist about your options. They may be able to polish away minor surface stains. If the issue is severe, though, you might have to get your restorations replaced. (Do not try to use whitening products to brighten your implants — the materials used to make restorations simply do not respond to the ingredients in whitening formulas.)
Dental implants can give you a glowing smile that maintains its color for the long haul! Talk to your dentist for personal guidance on how to maintain their original beauty.
