Who Is a Good Candidate for Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is great for people who are unhappy because of yellowish or brownish stains on their enamel. Because the procedure is relatively fast (especially the in-office option), it’s also ideal for those who want to look and feel their best in time for an important event. For patients dealing with other issues like chips, cracks, crookedness, or cavities, they will need to undergo other procedures before receiving whitening, as bleaching the teeth won’t make these flaws better and doesn’t feel great if you already have a toothache!

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

The first step is that our team will perform an oral exam to make sure your mouth is free of any problems like decay or gum disease. Giving someone whitening while they have oral health issues isn’t the most comfortable experience in the world, so we’ll address these issues first if needed.

From there, the process is pretty straightforward. A protective barrier is placed on the gums, and then a whitening gel is applied to the teeth. The active ingredient will either be hydrogen or carbamide peroxide. The big difference is that while OTC products have about 5% of these ingredients, what we use has 20% or more, meaning our gel can remove even the deepest stains.

The gel works by literally breaking the chemical bonds that hold the stains together, and it’s able to remove discoloration both on top of the enamel and below the surface.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening

We’ll give you a kit that consists of a custom-made set of mouth trays as well as a professional-strength whitening gel. You’ll use the kit as directed daily for about 20 minutes, and you’ll start noticing results within the first few days with your brightest smile appearing after about 10 days to two weeks.

In-Office Teeth Whitening

The in-office procedure takes about an hour or less. We simply place the gel on your teeth for 15-20 minutes before wiping it off and reapplying. Once you’re happy with the color, we’re finished! This is by far the quickest way to make a dramatic difference.

Tips for Maintaining Your Brighter Smile

Of course, if you’ve put in the effort to whiten your smile, you want the results to last! A few simple practices will make sure this happens:

  • Minimize your consumption of richly pigmented foods and drinks (i.e. tomato sauce, soy sauce, wine, coffee, soda, etc.)
  • Brush and floss your teeth twice a day to stop new stains from forming in the first place.
  • For the first 24-48 hours after whitening, try to eat mostly lightly colored foods like rice, oatmeal, and plain yogurt.
  • Keep up with your regular dental checkups—professional cleanings also prevent discoloration from developing.
